After struggling for the past few months with getting Mason to fall asleep during his naps I am officially leaving it up to him.
Before Today
Before he turned two it was easy...looking back maybe it was too easy. We would read a couple stories, turn on his music, put him in his bed, kiss good night and off he was to nap for a few hours. Now...we read 12+ books, pretend to go to the bathroom a couple times, pull my hair, spin around in the bed, run around the room, the list goes on and on...we will spend at least a couple hours doing this before I give up and we take a spin around the neighborhood and he falls asleep in the car. Where we then park in front of the house and I spend hours hoping for a text or email, super fun (and sadly no, he wakes up if I try to move him inside).
Today
We did the usual routine but this time just for an hour (mostly because I am little more worn down than usual because Aaron is out of town). Then he told me I should leave, and he could do it on his own. I did. I looked in and he was reading to himself in the rocking chair (okay maybe he was just pretending since he is only two...but I like to think he is pretty advanced) and blew me a kiss. I shut the door and went downstairs. I heard the little pitter patter of feet upstairs and ran back up thinking that I was going to catch him trying to get into the granola bars or the fridge...he heard me and went running back to his room and shut the door. When I get to his room, I find that instead he had to go to the bathroom and did. He went both #1 and #2 in his potty, put his pants back on (he forgot the undies...I am assuming this is because he heard me coming)...and was back in the rocker reading his book. This was when I decided I would just let him. He can have the next hour or two to read and rock by himself while I sit back and learn to relax a little about his afternoon naps.
